New Record set by UCCC Member - Black Attack (Calvin
Baltimore)
On
11/20/2005, the "Calvin's Racing" team
established a new World Record for a C5 Naturally
Aspirated Corvette with stock suspension. The record was
established with the team's 1999 C5 Hardtop Corvette
named "Black Attack." The previous record was
9.95 sec in a ¼ mile (previously reported in error as
9.94 in the ¼ mile) . "Calvin's Racing" team
set the new record when "Black Attack" was
piloted by team owner Calvin Baltimore on the fourth
(4th) pass with a record-time of 9.46 at 146.19mph in
the ¼ mile. The event took place at Capital Raceway in
Crofton, Maryland (an NHRA Sanctioned ¼ mile drag
racing track).

The
"Vette Magazine" photographer on-hand captured
the event along with several other camera crews.
Articles are sure to be released within the next two
months. Everyone appeared to know the fourth pass was
special as soon as "Black Attack" launched
from the starting line. The car held tight and fast
through the 1/8 mile and the spectators and the team
began to feel something special about to happen.
Comments such as, "If this run does not do it,
nothing will" - Jim Wynne, Calvin's Racing
Statistician, reflected and represented the feeling of
everyone witnessing what turned into a record breaking
pass. When the timing lights announced the elapsed time
(ET) of 9.46 seconds, an immediate celebration erupted
at the starting line and throughout the
spectator-stands. The celebration continued as the
"Black Attack" was towed back to the team's
pit area where the champagne began to flow.
